Underground Gardens

Posted On 11 May, 2018

The best part of this semester was making multiple site visits to CBOs. One in particular that I enjoyed was our Under Ground Garden Tour. I had heard many people talk about it and how beautiful it was. Could it be that I had drove past it several times and never knew it existed? Yes! When I drove up to the gate I realized I had drove past it several times but never noticed it. I was eager to get underground and see it for myself. This place sure did not disappoint me. It is a true master piece. It was a full on house equipped with a kitchen, bedroom, and shower. Baldassare Forestiere built it all with his own hands. The best part of this was seeing fruit trees and other plants that have been intact for over 90 years. The first noticeable thing was the drop in temperature the deeper we went in. Living in the valley, during the hot summers I can see being underground was much more pleasant. I could not get past the idea that the underground gardens was just a piece of land that Mr. Forestiere saw as an opportunity. I can only imagine the many other things he had in mind for his creation. As a student, it made me realize that only I am in control of my future and what legacy I would want to leave behind. One day my great grandchildren will tell my stories. I think it is about time I work on my legacy. So I leave you with a quote from Mr. Forestiere….

“To make something with a lot of money, that is easy; but to make something out of nothing – now that is really something.”
